If you are lucky enough to live in a large house with an upstairs balcony, then it is important to make the most of it and utilise it in the best possible way. When travelling through large cities, it is evident that for many flat owners the balcony is a place to store a bike and hang out washing. However, whether your balcony overlooks rolling hills and green fields or some beautiful Victorian edifice with ornate mouldings and features in a big city, then it is important that you make good use of your balcony.
Depending on the size, of course, it will hopefully be big enough to accommodate at least a small bistrot table and a couple of chairs. Just perfect for catching the early morning sun at breakfast time and savouring the first cup of coffee of the day. It may be big enough for a couple of comfortable armchairs or even a sun lounger for serious relaxing and sunbathing. Even if it is quite small, you could add a splash of colour throughout the year, by partaking in some pot gardening. Plant spring bulbs for March and April and summer blooms to flower later in the year. You could add a hanging basket or fix one or two wall mounted containers to the balcony wall to add height to your floral display.
With imagination, there is plenty you can do to transform your balcony to a place to relax and breathe in fresh, clean air, so move the bike somewhere else and keep those baskets of washing well away!
