If you like pine furniture, it is possible to buy it in its raw state which is ideal if you want to stain and polish it yourself. Staining and polishing is quite labour intensive, so if you are prepared to do this yourself, then it usually saves you money too.
First of all, make sure your item of pine furniture is free of dust. Check it all over to see if there are any small holes which might need filling with a wood filler or if there are any rough patches which may need sanding. Your item is furniture is now ready for staining. Water based stains are available in a number of shades. You can apply the stain with a brush or a sponge or a paint pad but make sure you apply an even layer and that you work methodically along your piece of furniture. Once you have started, you need to finish. If you are halfway through staining a door on your wardrobe and the phone rings, then leave it to ring! Once the stain is completely dry, you need to apply wax polish. This is applied with a soft cloth and does require some elbow grease though it shouldn’t be too heavy a job. When this is done, you can buff the surface of your furniture with a soft cloth or you may have a soft brush attachment for an electric drill which will make the job easier. Then stand back and admire your handiwork!
