Fashions change over the years, some disappear completely, never to re-surface again, whilst others make popular reappearances from time to time. At the moment, possibly thanks to DIY and home improvement programmes on the TV, wallpaper is definitely making a come-back, even if it is just as a feature on one wall in a room.
There are a plethora of designs, colours and patterns to choose from. However, if your wall is in a poor state and has been filled and sanded down but still reveals odd bumps and imperfections or maybe has been painted in a dark colour which could show through light wallpaper, then you may want to consider using lining paper first. Lining paper is sold in different thicknesses and, if possible you should consider buying a better quality, thicker paper as it will be easier to use. You can, of course, use a lining paper on walls to paint once the paste is dry but if you are using prior to wallpapering, then paste the lining paper onto the walls horizontally. This is so that the edges won’t line up with the wallpaper on top.
DIY stores also sell thin polystyrene sheeting which can be used to line walls prior to wallpapering. This can help to keep warmth in a room and is also good for areas where condensation is high, like a bathroom or kitchen, for instance. However, polystyrene sheeting can become easily damaged and dented under wallpaper so it is not recommended for busy areas in the house where there is a lot of traffic.
