It can often be difficult deciding how to make the most of a small room and how to decorate it so that it gives the illusion of having more space than is actually available.
The first tip is to make sure you use brilliant white or light colours for paintwork, walls and flooring. Dark colours will appear to bring walls closer and make the room appear smaller.
Select your furniture carefully. It seems obvious to say that large cumbersome pieces of furniture will overpower a small room. If you are really short of space, consider buying a small 2 seater settee and one or two occasional chairs, rather than a three piece suite. Extending dining tables or drop leaf tables are also a good buy as they can be folded to a smaller size when not in use. For a bedroom, choose a small 4′ wide double bed, rather than a conventional 4′ 6” double bed. Buy furniture which does not sit low on the floor but where you can see some of the flooring underneath.
You can make a space feel more spacious by making good use of mirrors which can reflect light into the darker recesses of a room.
Storage is likely to be vital in a small room. Erect shelving in awkward corners or buy furniture which has more than one use. For example, seating which has storage underneath or coffee tables which have a lift-up lid to store books and newspapers. You can also use wall mounted brackets to move items away from the floor. Guitars and other large musical instruments can be stored on a wall, keeping floor space clutter-free and easy to clean.
