Installing a shower – Things to consider

There’s plenty to think about if you are considering installing a shower in your bathroom.

If you have a small bathroom, then a shower over the bath tub might be a good solution. Newer styles of bath tubs have baths which are often a little wider at the tap end, above where the shower is likely to be and this gives more room for showering.

If you have a free-standing tub, but would still like a shower, then you will obviously need to consider installing a separate shower cubicle. If you are short on bathroom space, then you may wish to consider having bi-folding doors or sliding doors. For showers in bigger surroundings then you could have hinged doors.

There are several types of showers to consider. Electric showers only require a cold water feed and are warmed by heating elements inside the unit (a bit like a kettle). Manual mixer showers are cost-effective and easy to use and require hot and cold water which is mixed together. With a thermostatic mixer shower, once you set the temperature required, the unit will retain that heat giving you a comfortable shower at a constant temperature. If your home has a low pressure water system, then you may need to install a power shower which has a built-in electric pump to increase the rate of water flow. The most modern showers have digital controls which regulate temperature and flow rate at the touch of a button.
